How VCI Paper Works
The base paper, often kraft, is treated with vapor corrosion inhibitor compounds. Once the treated paper is placed in an enclosed space such as a wrapped bundle, box, or sealed bag, those compounds slowly release inhibitor molecules into the air. The molecules diffuse throughout the enclosure and settle on every exposed metal surface, including hard-to-reach areas like threads, crevices, and internal cavities. There they form a thin molecular layer that displaces moisture and interrupts the electrochemical reactions that cause rust.
Crucially, this protection does not depend on contact. The vapor reaches surfaces the paper never touches, and it keeps the air space saturated so protection is continuous. When the metal is removed from the packaging, the inhibitor layer evaporates on its own, so parts come out clean and require no degreasing or cleaning before use.
VCI Paper vs Desiccants
VCI paper and desiccants both fight corrosion in storage and transit, but they work in opposite ways. A desiccant is passive: it absorbs moisture from the air to lower humidity, which slows corrosion. VCI paper is active: it places a protective film directly on the metal, so it works even if some moisture is present.
