Coated paper

Kangchuang industrial coated paper is a functional barrier packaging material in which a base kraft or specialty paper is coated with a layer of polyethylene (PE) or other functional polymer to add moisture resistance, grease resistance, heat-seal capability, or surface printability. Available in single-side and double-side coated configurations, with PE coat weights from 12g/m² to 35g/m² and base paper weights from 30gsm to 120gsm, our coated paper is supplied in roll and sheet formats for industrial packaging, hardware component wrapping, and barrier packaging applications. Factory-direct from our ISO 9001 certified Dongguan facility since 2003 — with free DHL Express samples to the USA.

  • PE Coating — Proven Moisture Barrier: Polyethylene coating on kraft paper base creates a continuous moisture barrier with MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate) as low as 5 g/m²/24hr at 38°C/90% RH — effectively excluding moisture from packaged components during sea freight transit in humid container environments.
  • Single-Side or Double-Side Coating Options: One-side PE coated paper (coating on inner surface only) is standard for most wrapping and lining applications. Double-side coated paper provides full moisture exclusion from both surfaces for demanding barrier packaging requirements.
  • Heat-Sealable for Automated Packaging Lines: PE-coated paper seals at 120°C–160°C using standard heat-seal equipment. Enables automated heat-seal closure of paper bags, pouches, and box liners on high-speed production packaging lines without requiring additional adhesive.
  • Custom Coat Weight from 12–35 g/m²: Lighter coat weights (12–15 g/m²) for moisture-resistant wrapping. Heavier coat weights (25–35 g/m²) for full barrier packaging and heat-seal pouch applications. Coat weight is specified at ordering and manufactured to ±2 g/m² tolerance.
  • Printable Surface Available: Our surface-treated PE coated paper grade accepts flexographic and offset printing on the coated side, enabling brand printing, product labeling, and regulatory marking directly onto the packaging material without a separate label.
  • Custom Width & Roll Format: Base paper from 30gsm to 120gsm. PE coat from 12–35 g/m². Roll widths from 200mm to 1,600mm. Core diameter 3-inch or 6-inch. Custom slit widths for automated packaging equipment feeding.

What is Industrial Coated Paper?

Industrial coated paper is a composite packaging material produced by applying one or more functional coating layers to a paper substrate. The coating transforms the paper’s base properties — adding water resistance, grease resistance, heat-seal capability, vapor barrier performance, or surface smoothness — while retaining the mechanical strength, foldability, and printability of the paper base.

The most widely used industrial coated paper type is PE coated kraft paper, where a layer of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is extrusion-coated onto a kraft paper base under controlled temperature and pressure. The result is a flexible, tear-resistant packaging sheet that combines the structural strength of kraft paper with the moisture-excluding properties of polyethylene film — without the environmental and cost disadvantages of using pure plastic film.

Kangchuang produces industrial coated paper primarily for B2B packaging applications in manufacturing and industrial supply chains, where moisture protection, mechanical strength, and cost-effectiveness are the primary requirements. Our coated paper is not a commodity product — each grade is manufactured to specification, with coat weight, base paper type, and surface treatment matched to the buyer’s specific application and packaging equipment requirements.

PE Coated Paper vs Uncoated Paper — What the Coating Actually Does

Uncoated kraft paper absorbs moisture readily — its cellulose fiber structure is hydrophilic, meaning water molecules bond to the fiber surfaces. In humid environments, uncoated paper can absorb up to 10–15% of its own weight in water, causing it to soften, lose tensile strength, and in extreme cases disintegrate. For industrial packaging applications that involve moisture exposure during manufacturing, outdoor storage, or sea freight transit, uncoated paper provides inadequate moisture protection.

PE coating changes this completely. Polyethylene is hydrophobic — water molecules do not bond to it. A continuous PE coating layer on the paper surface creates a physical barrier that prevents moisture from reaching the cellulose fiber beneath. The effectiveness of this barrier is measured by MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate, measured in g/m²/24hr under standardized conditions of 38°C and 90% RH). Standard 15 g/m² PE coated kraft paper achieves MVTR values of approximately 15–20 g/m²/24hr, while heavier 30 g/m² coatings can achieve 5–8 g/m²/24hr — a significant moisture exclusion performance for industrial transit packaging.

Beyond moisture resistance, PE coating adds heat-seal capability (enabling automated bag and pouch sealing without adhesives), grease resistance (PE is inherently grease-resistant, making it suitable for oily component packaging), and surface printability (with surface treatment, PE coated paper accepts standard printing inks for product identification and branding).

Key Applications — Where Industrial Coated Paper is Used
Hardware Component Packaging
Metal hardware parts, fasteners, stampings, and machined components require packaging that prevents moisture-induced surface rust during storage and shipping. PE coated kraft paper provides moisture exclusion without the cost or environmental concerns of full plastic packaging. Components are wrapped or placed in PE coated paper-lined cartons that maintain a low-humidity microenvironment around the parts.
Industrial Parts & Export Packaging
For heavy industrial products shipped via sea freight in open-top or standard containers, moisture from condensation inside containers is a major cause of product damage. PE coated paper liners inside shipping cartons, or wrapping of individual parts in PE coated paper, provides the moisture barrier needed for 30+ day container transit to US and European markets.
Specialty Barrier Packaging
Electronic component packaging (non-static-sensitive items), optical instrument packaging, and food-adjacent industrial packaging (non-food contact) all use PE coated paper as a cost-effective barrier material that provides significantly better moisture protection than uncoated paper while being lower cost and more environmentally favorable than full plastic packaging.
Heat-Seal Bags & Pouches
PE coated paper is the standard base material for heat-seal paper bags and pouches used in industrial and commercial packaging. The PE coating on the inner surface provides both the moisture barrier and the heat-seal interface, while the kraft paper outer surface provides structural strength and printability.

PE stands for polyethylene — specifically low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in most industrial paper coating applications. PE coated paper is produced by extrusion-coating a thin layer of molten polyethylene onto a kraft paper substrate, creating a composite material that combines the structural strength and printability of paper with the moisture resistance and heat-seal capability of polyethylene film. The polyethylene layer ranges from 12 g/m² (light coating) to 35 g/m² (heavy coating) depending on the barrier performance required.

MVTR stands for Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate — the standard measurement of how much water vapor passes through a material per unit area per unit time, typically expressed as g/m²/24hr measured at 38°C and 90% relative humidity (ASTM E96 or equivalent). A lower MVTR means a better moisture barrier. For industrial packaging purposes: uncoated kraft paper has MVTR exceeding 1,000 g/m²/24hr (essentially no barrier). Standard 15 g/m² PE coated paper has MVTR of 15–20 g/m²/24hr. Heavy 30 g/m² PE coated paper has MVTR of 5–8 g/m²/24hr. Your required MVTR depends on the moisture sensitivity of your product and the duration of storage or transit.

One-side coated paper (1S) has PE coating on only one surface — the inner surface that contacts the packaged product. The outer kraft surface remains uncoated and provides printability, stacking friction, and standard paper handling characteristics. This is the standard configuration for wrapping, bag-making, and carton-lining applications. Double-side coated paper (2S) has PE coating on both surfaces, providing moisture exclusion from both sides simultaneously. This is used for applications where the packaging is in contact with moisture or liquids from both inside and outside — such as wet product packaging or long-duration outdoor-exposed storage.

Yes. On request, we can produce PE coated paper using food-grade polyethylene resin (FDA-compliant LDPE) and food-grade kraft base paper with no restricted substances. Food-grade coated paper is suitable for indirect food contact packaging applications. If your application requires direct food contact, please specify this clearly in your inquiry and we will confirm the applicable food-safety standard requirements (FDA, EU Regulation 10/2011, etc.) and provide the relevant compliance documentation.

Standard LDPE coated paper seals at 120°C–160°C jaw temperature with a dwell time of 0.3–1.0 seconds, depending on your sealing equipment’s jaw pressure and the paper caliper. Lighter coat weights (12–15 g/m²) require the higher end of this range. Heavier coat weights (25–35 g/m²) can seal at the lower end. We provide a heat-seal temperature guide with every sample shipment so your production team can dial in the correct settings for your sealing equipment without trial-and-error during production startup.

Yes — our surface-treated PE coated paper grade accepts flexographic printing (standard for most paper bag and packaging applications) and offset printing. The surface treatment (corona discharge) raises the surface energy of the PE layer to 38–42 dynes/cm, enabling ink adhesion. Without surface treatment, the PE surface has surface energy around 31 dynes/cm — too low for most printing inks to adhere. Please specify ‘printable grade’ in your inquiry if printing is required. We can also arrange printing at our partner facility in Dongguan if needed.

We offer PE coated paper on base paper from 30gsm to 120gsm. The most common base paper weights for industrial applications are: 40gsm (light duty wrapping, inner liners), 60gsm (standard industrial wrapping and bag-making), 80gsm (medium-duty applications requiring good puncture resistance), and 100–120gsm (heavy-duty applications, multiwall bag inner liners). We can also apply PE coating to our specialty base papers including sulfur-free paper (for PE-coated sulfur-free packaging of electronic components) and release paper (for self-adhesive applications).

Standard PE coated kraft paper is technically recyclable but requires specialized paper recycling facilities equipped to separate the PE coating from the paper fiber — standard paper recycling streams typically cannot process PE-coated grades. In markets with limited access to specialized recycling facilities, PE coated paper should be treated as mixed material waste. We are developing PE coating alternatives using water-based barrier coatings and bio-based polymer coatings that offer better end-of-life recyclability — contact us if your application has specific sustainability requirements.

Minimum order for standard PE coated paper is 1,000kg, which represents approximately one pallet of standard-width roll product. Sample orders (for evaluation before committing to production quantities) are available in single rolls of approximately 10–20kg, shipped via DHL Express to USA and other locations at no charge. Container-load pricing (FCL, typically 15–20 metric tons per 20-foot container) is available at our best FOB Dongguan rates for high-volume buyers.

Yes. Custom roll widths are one of our standard services. Our slitting equipment can produce any width from 200mm to 1,600mm in continuous roll form, with width tolerance of ±0.5mm. Many industrial packaging machines require specific roll widths that match their forming tube or roll-fed packaging head dimensions — we precision-slit to those specifications. Please provide your required width, core diameter (3-inch or 6-inch is standard), and maximum roll OD when requesting a quote.

Yes. Double-side PE coated paper (2S coated) is produced by passing the paper through our coating line twice, applying PE coating to each side separately. This configuration is less common than single-side coating and is typically used for pouch applications where both the inner and outer surfaces contact potentially humid environments, or for specialty laminate applications. MOQ for double-side coated paper is 2,000kg due to the additional processing step. Please specify your coat weight requirement for each side independently (they can be different).
