Coated Paper — PE Coated Kraft Paper for Moisture Barrier Packaging and Heat-Seal Applications

Kangchuang Paper manufactures polyethylene (PE) coated paper — industrial kraft paper with a precisely applied polyethylene coating layer that creates a moisture barrier, grease resistance, and heat-seal capability for automated packaging applications. Our PE coated paper is used in automated packaging machinery for food-adjacent industrial packaging, medical device pouching, hardware parts wrapping, and moisture-sensitive product protection. Available in single-side and double-side PE coating configurations, coating weights from 10gsm to 30gsm on base kraft paper from 40gsm to 120gsm, in roll widths from 50mm to 1,600mm. Factory-direct from Dongguan with free sample rolls shipped via DHL Express to the United States.

What is PE Coated Paper?

PE coated paper (polyethylene coated paper) is an industrial paper product consisting of a kraft paper or specialty paper base with one or both sides laminated with a thin layer of polyethylene (PE) film through an extrusion coating process. The polyethylene layer — typically 10 to 30 microns thick — transforms the base paper from a porous, moisture-absorbing material into a moisture-resistant, grease-resistant, and heat-sealable packaging substrate. This combination of paper strength and plastic barrier properties makes PE coated paper one of the most versatile materials in industrial packaging. Unlike standalone plastic films, PE coated paper has the structural rigidity of paper (making it compatible with folding, creasing, and printing operations), while the PE coating provides the moisture barrier and heat-seal capability that plain paper lacks. This dual functionality is why PE coated paper is specified for automated packaging lines that need both the machinability of paper and the barrier properties of plastic.

How Does PE Coated Paper Work in Industrial Packaging?

PE coated paper works through the physical barrier properties of the polyethylene coating layer. Polyethylene is inherently hydrophobic — it repels water and does not absorb moisture vapor. When applied as a continuous film on the paper surface, it creates an unbroken moisture barrier that prevents water vapor transmission from the external environment to the packaged product (and vice versa). This moisture barrier function is measured as WVTR (Water Vapor Transmission Rate), typically rated in g/m²/24h. For heat-seal applications, the PE coating serves a second critical function: when two PE-coated surfaces are pressed together under heat (typically 120–180°C depending on PE type), the polyethylene melts and fuses, creating a permanent seal without the need for adhesive. This heat-seal capability enables automated packaging machinery to form, fill, and seal packages from flat PE coated paper stock in a continuous high-speed operation — a process that is impossible with uncoated paper.

Coated paper FAQ's

Single-side PE coated paper has a polyethylene layer on one side only — the coated side provides the moisture barrier and heat-seal surface, while the uncoated side accepts printing, labeling, and adhesive bonding. Double-side PE coated paper has PE coating on both sides, providing moisture barrier protection from both surfaces — used when the paper must resist moisture penetration from both the product side and the external environment simultaneously.

Kangchuang offers PE coating weights from 10gsm (thin barrier coating for moderate moisture resistance) to 30gsm (heavy barrier coating for demanding moisture and grease resistance applications). The most commonly ordered coating weight is 15–20gsm, which provides an effective moisture barrier while maintaining paper flexibility for folding and machine feeding operations.

Yes. PE coated paper is specifically designed for automatic packaging equipment including form-fill-seal machines, pouch-making equipment, wrapping machines, and bag-forming systems. The PE coating provides the heat-seal capability that automatic machines require to form sealed packages, while the paper base provides the rigidity needed for reliable machine feeding and folding.

PE coated paper is technically recyclable at facilities equipped to separate the paper fiber from the PE coating layer. However, not all municipal recycling programs accept PE coated paper due to the separation requirement. For customers with sustainability requirements, Kangchuang can advise on coating configurations that optimize recyclability while maintaining required barrier performance.

Base paper weights range from 40gsm (lightweight packaging) to 120gsm (heavy-duty structural packaging). The base paper is typically kraft paper for maximum strength, but bleached and semi-bleached grades are available for applications requiring a white or light-colored packaging surface.
