Newsprint

Kangchuang Paper manufactures and supplies blank newsprint paper rolls in 40gsm and 52gsm grades for two distinct market applications: packaging and stuffing (blank, ink-free rolls used for void fill, product wrapping, and moving supplies) and web offset printing (standard newsprint rolls for newspaper and commercial printing operations). Our newsprint is produced from mechanical (groundwood/TMP) pulp, delivering the characteristic lightweight, cost-efficient, and highly crumplable properties that make newsprint the world’s highest-volume non-packaging paper grade. Available in roll widths from 200mm (packaging slit rolls) to 1,500mm (full web offset printing rolls) in both standard 40gsm and 52gsm grades. Factory-direct from Dongguan — bulk wholesale pricing for moving supply distributors, packaging companies, printing operations, and paper wholesalers. Free DHL Express samples to USA buyers.

  • 40gsm and 52gsm — Both Standard Newsprint Grades Stocked: 40gsm is the standard printing newsprint grade used by newspapers globally — maximum page count per roll weight, optimal ink absorption for cold-set web offset printing. Also the lightest packaging newsprint — maximum crumple volume per kilogram for void fill applications. 52gsm is the medium-weight grade providing better tear resistance for mechanical packaging equipment and heavier item wrapping. Both grades maintained in production for consistent supply to repeat buyers.
  • Blank (Ink-Free) — Suitable for Direct Product Contact: Our newsprint is produced blank — no printing inks, no OBAs (optical brightening agents), no colorants. This makes it suitable for use as stuffing paper in direct contact with packaged goods, and as food-adjacent (indirect food contact) packaging material. Blank newsprint does not transfer ink or color residues to packaged goods — the critical distinction from using collected printed newspaper as packing material.
  • Custom Roll Widths — Packaging Slit Rolls and Full Print Widths: Full-width printing rolls (1,400–1,500mm) for web offset newspaper and commercial printing. Custom-slit narrow rolls (200mm–900mm) for packaging line feeding, mechanical paper crumplers, and manual packing stations. Both format types produced from the same base newsprint grade — we cut to your required width with ±1mm tolerance.
  • Excellent Ink Absorption — Compatible with Cold-Set Web Offset Printing: Newsprint’s mechanical pulp composition produces a porous, absorbent paper surface that rapidly absorbs cold-set web offset printing inks without requiring heat-drying — this is why newsprint is used for newspaper printing worldwide. High ink absorption, low linting risk on web press blankets, and consistent surface formation across the roll are key printing specifications our newsprint meets.
  • Competitive Wholesale FOB Pricing — Factory-Direct from China: Newsprint is a commodity paper that trades globally at established market prices. Our FOB Dongguan pricing is typically 15–30% below equivalent newsprint sourced from North American or European mills for US buyers — a significant saving on a high-volume commodity product consumed in large quantities by packaging distributors and newspaper printing operations.
  • Recyclable and Biodegradable — Standard Paper Recycling Stream: Newsprint is accepted by all standard paper recycling programs and biodegrades under composting conditions. Our blank newsprint has no coatings or synthetic additives that would prevent recycling or composting. For e-commerce and packaging operations communicating sustainability commitments, newsprint void fill provides fully recyclable, plastic-free packaging documentation for your ESG reporting.

Understanding Newsprint — Mechanical Pulp Paper and Its Properties

Newsprint is produced from mechanical pulp — wood fiber produced by grinding or thermo-mechanical processing of wood chips without chemical digestion. The mechanical process retains lignin and hemicellulose in the pulp, producing a high-yield (90–95% wood fiber recovery versus 45–50% for kraft chemical pulping) but lower-strength fiber with characteristic properties.

The retained lignin in mechanical pulp is responsible for newsprint’s natural off-white to cream color (lignin is amber-colored) and its tendency to yellow when exposed to light and air — the familiar yellowing of old newspapers. This also limits the storage life of newsprint compared to chemical pulp papers.

The high porosity of mechanical pulp newsprint — a consequence of the irregular, partially damaged fiber surface created by mechanical processing — produces excellent ink absorption properties for cold-set printing inks, which penetrate the paper surface rapidly without heat-drying. This porosity also contributes to newsprint’s excellent crumplability for packaging applications: mechanical pulp fibers are less tightly bonded than chemical pulp fibers, allowing the sheet to compress and deform easily into cushioning forms.

Newsprint for Printing vs Newsprint for Packaging — Key Differences in Specification

The same base newsprint grade serves both printing and packaging markets, but buyers in each market prioritize different properties.

Printing Newsprint Specifications: Full roll width (1,400–1,500mm) for web printing press compatibility. Tight basis weight tolerance (±2gsm) for consistent pagination. Ink absorption rate (measured by Bristow test or K&N ink test) for print quality. Surface formation uniformity for even ink distribution. Low linting (loose fiber generation) to prevent blanket contamination on offset press. Breaking length and elongation for web press runnability.

Packaging Newsprint Specifications: Roll width matching packaging equipment (200mm–900mm for packaging lines). Blank/ink-free confirmation for product-contact applications. Crumplability for void fill efficiency (mechanical pulp structure confirmed). Tear resistance for manual wrapping durability (52gsm preferred for heavier items). Recycled content option for sustainable packaging documentation.

Key Applications — Where Newsprint Rolls Are Used

Newspaper and Commercial Web Printing: The original and still significant market for newsprint — daily newspapers, free-sheet publications, and commercial web offset printing of catalogues, inserts, and advertising materials. Cold-set web offset printing on 40gsm newsprint is the most economical high-speed print medium available.

E-Commerce Void Fill and Cushioning: Blank newsprint crumpled into a mass of paper provides effective void fill and cushioning in shipping cartons. Low cost per volume of cushioning produced, recyclable after use, plastic-free — all advantages over foam and plastic alternatives for sustainability-positioned brands.

Moving Supplies: Professional moving companies and DIY movers use newsprint to wrap glassware, dishes, ornaments, and fragile household items before packing in moving boxes. The soft, conformable newsprint sheet protects surfaces and absorbs vibration.

Retail Tissue and Gift Wrap: Budget-tier retail tissue replacement — single-layer newsprint sheets used as gift wrap, crinkle fill, and box liner in retail gift packaging where cost matters more than premium appearance.

Newsprint is a lightweight paper made from mechanical (groundwood or thermomechanical) pulp — wood fiber produced by grinding or mechanically refining wood without chemical digestion. The mechanical process retains most wood components (lignin, hemicellulose) in the pulp, producing a high-yield, cost-efficient paper with characteristic off-white color, high porosity, and excellent crumplability. It is the global standard paper for newspaper printing and is also widely used for packaging void fill, moving supplies, and product wrapping.

40gsm is the standard printing newsprint weight — used globally for newspaper printing, providing maximum page count per roll weight and optimal ink absorption for cold-set web offset printing. It is also the most economical and highest void fill volume-per-kg newsprint grade for packaging applications. 52gsm is heavier with better tear resistance — preferred for mechanical crumpler machines (which can struggle with very light paper), manual wrapping of heavier items (ceramics, tools above 500g), and applications where the paper must withstand more handling stress without tearing.

Blank newsprint (ink-free) is suitable for indirect food contact (wrapping food items in sealed inner packaging) and for direct contact with non-food consumer goods. It is not cleared for direct food contact (touching unwrapped food) without specific food-contact certification. For non-food applications — wrapping glassware, ceramics, electronics accessories, hardware — blank newsprint in direct contact is standard practice and poses no contamination risk.

Standard newspaper printing roll widths: full reel 1,400–1,500mm (compatible with most broadsheet and tabloid web presses), half-width 700–750mm (for half-web and twin-web press configurations), and custom sub-widths for specialty printing equipment. Specify your press model and required reel width when ordering — we will confirm compatibility and produce to specification.

Yes — pre-cut newsprint sheets are available for manual packaging operations, arts and crafts applications, and any non-roll-fed use. Standard sizes: broadsheet (375×600mm), tabloid (300×375mm), A3 (297×420mm), A4 (210×297mm), and custom cut sizes up to 1,000×1,500mm. Sheets are supplied in ream packs or carton packs.

Sample evaluation: 2 rolls at your specified grade and width — shipped free via DHL Express at no charge. Production/wholesale orders: minimum 1,000kg total weight. Newsprint is a commodity product with minimum economic production batch quantities — buyers requiring less than 1,000kg for production are better served by sample quantity first and then scaling to minimum production order.

Yes — all mechanical pulp newsprint yellows when exposed to light and air due to the lignin content of mechanical pulp, which undergoes photo-oxidation. This is inherent to newsprint chemistry and cannot be eliminated without bleaching (which would make it a different, more expensive paper product). For short-term storage (days to weeks) before use in packaging, yellowing is not a concern. For longer-term storage, protect newsprint rolls from direct sunlight and humidity to minimize yellowing. Under proper storage conditions (dark, dry, cool), newsprint maintains acceptable quality for 12–18 months.

Yes. Our 40gsm and 52gsm newsprint rolls are compatible with standard paper crumpler machine types (Ranpak, Storopack, PadPak brands and equivalents). The mechanical pulp structure of newsprint produces excellent crumple characteristics — higher volume output per roll weight than kraft paper in crumpler applications. Specify your machine’s required roll width and core diameter for correct specification.

Yes — newsprint with 30–60% post-consumer recycled fiber content (de-inked secondary fiber blended with virgin TMP) is available on request for buyers requiring recycled content documentation for sustainability reporting or retailer requirements. Recycled-content newsprint has slightly lower brightness (may appear grayer than virgin TMP newsprint) and marginally lower tensile strength. Recycled content percentage and documentation are specified at order time.

Newsprint is lighter (40–52gsm standard vs 60–120gsm for standard kraft) and more flexible — it crumples into a larger cushioning volume per gram than kraft paper. This makes it more economical for void fill applications where maximum cushioning volume per kilogram of paper is the priority. Kraft paper is stronger (higher tensile strength and tear resistance at equivalent gsm) — preferred for wrapping heavier items, outer packaging that must withstand transit forces, and applications where the paper must not tear during handling.

Full printing reels (1,400–1,500mm wide) are supplied on standard 76mm inner diameter paper cores, with plastic end plugs and stretch-wrap outer protection — compatible with standard newspaper press reel handling equipment (reel stands, splicers, web tension systems). Large printing orders are palletized or loaded loose in containers depending on buyer’s receiving equipment. We can accommodate specific reel diameter maximums or minimum run lengths for specific press configurations — provide your press specifications when inquiring.
